A perfectly struck balance

Turn-of-the-century architecture meets modern design at The Hi-Lo Hotel. A mixing of elegant highs and effortless lows rests at the very heart of this downtown boutique, a stone's throw from the Portland waterfront.

The 120-room Hi-Lo Hotel is located in the historic Oregon Pioneer Building, which has been respectfully nudged into the 21st Century. This careful updating is on display throughout the hotel – for instance, in the lobby sofas are supported by bare concrete, suggesting the buildings origins, with muted décor reflective of the Oregon landscape.

This balance continues in the hotel restaurant, Alto Bajo, where classic Mexican cuisine meets Oaxacan influences. The kitchen is helmed by Chef Chip Barnes and features a menu developed in collaboration with famed Oaxacan Chef Iliana de la Vega. Move to the lobby-level bar – fittingly christened Lo Bar – and find a few of Portland’s finest enjoying a drink. Venturing outside, guests are a pleasant walk away from Tom McCall Waterfront Park, an abundance of cool artisanal street food stands, and tax-free retail therapy.
