Old world opulence in the Magic City

Birmingham, Alabama is the only city in the world located close to iron ore, coal, and limestone – the three minerals crucial in the creation of steel. It should come as no surprise that the area was dubbed “magic” and earned its place as an industrial boomtown in the early 1900s. The iconic Empire Building, built in 1906 and home to the Elyton Hotel, reflects that proud heritage.

The hotel was designed with classical architecture in mind and cuts an impressive figure on the downtown Birmingham skyline. Original pink granite pillars support top-floor window arches, lined with ornate lettering and colorful molded busts – all details preserved from the original construction. Interiors have received similar care, from original lighting fixtures to the sweeping marble staircase which serves as the grand showpiece of the lobby.

The 117 loft-style guestrooms feature décor with contemporary flourishes alongside custom pieces that nod to the building’s history. take the glass-ceilinged elevator to Moon Shine, the rooftop bar, and grab a cocktail or a craft beer while enjoying the view from what was once one of the south’s tallest buildings. Guests and locals alike also gather at The Yard, the hotel’s restaurant, where seasonal fare is crafted with ingredients from local farmers.
